Include the product in the add-ons manager - there seems to be no way of turning the product off???

It is there. Please go to the IE Tools | Extensions dialog, FireFox add-on manager, etc.

In IE it is possible to use the Inquiry Toolbar to switch the Inquiry Side Bar on / off easily. You can also can use the Inquiry Side Bar button "X" in its caption to close it.
